The JPG or JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) file format is designed for compressing either full-color or
grayscale images. This compression method does not work well on non-realistic images,
such as cartoons or line drawings.
Some advantages of using the JPEG format are:
• High compression ratios are possible for faster downloading of images as part
of a web page.
• The JPEG format gives excellent results in most photographs.
• JPEG supports 24-bit "true color" to grayscale.
The JPEG format does not support transparency. You can matte the background color of
an image to match the color of a web page. This procedure will simulate the appearance
of a background transparency.

JPEG uses a technique called, Discrete Cosine Transformation to produce a sliding scale
of compression. This "lossy" compression method throws away part of the image in the
process. As a result, the image quality can be affected.
