Project Mercury (1958-1963) was America's first man-in-space program. The prime objectives of Project Mercury were to orbit a manned spacecraft, to prove that man could survive the experience of weightlessness and G-forces above 10 g's, and to recover spacecraft and astronauts safely. All of these objectives were met in the Mercury project. Though these achievements pale in comparison to today's accomplishments, each Mercury flight unified and strengthened national commitment to the task of sending a man to the Moon. The manned portion of Project Mercury consisted of two suborbital flights launched by the Redstone and four orbital flights launched by the Atlas.
